Selection of slurry pump under high-concentration abrasive conditions
2026-06-05 10:04:15 470 江苏永信贵宾会In industries such as mining, metallurgy, mineral processing, and salt lake chemical engineering, slurry pumps are long-term exposed to high-concentration, high-specific-gravity, large-particle, highly abrasive, and even highly corrosive media. They one of the key equipment most prone to wear and failure in the entire conveying system. Particularly in projects of the world's leading mining enterprises, such as BHP Billiton, Codelco, China Minmetals, Aluminum Corporation of China, Barrick, Southern Copper, and ArcelorMittal, the stability of slurry pumps directly impacts production continuity and the cost per ton of ore processed. Therefore, when selecting slurry pumps for high-concentration abrasive conditions, one should not only consider flow rate and head but also a comprehensive judgment based on medium characteristics, process requirements, and life-cycle costs.
First, basic operating parameters form the foundation of pump selection. Flow rate, head, slurry specific gravity, pH value, particle size, particle shape, and solid concentration must all be clearly defined. For slurries with a concentration exceeding 50%, if particles are large and have sharp edges, wear on the impeller, casing, front and back liners will significantly. In such cases, priority should be given to heavy-duty slurry pumps with large passages, low rotational speed, and high wear-resistant materials, while prolonged operation of the pump away from its high-efficiency zone. Otherwise, not only will efficiency decrease, but localized erosion will also accelerate.
Second, the requirements of supporting equipment must be considered For example, in flotation processes, if the medium contains a large amount of foam, ordinary slurry pumps are prone to cavitation, flow interruption, and efficiency decline. In such cases, foam pumps or special impeller structures should be considered. For cyclone feed conditions, high stability of inlet pressure is required; the pump must not only meet the head requirements but also ensure minimal pressure fluctuations and long wear life.
From practical cases, in a Chilean copper mine, the slurry after the primary ball mill has large particles and a concentration exceeding 58%, with a single pump flow rate exceeding 11,000 m³/h. The impeller life of traditional mill pumps typically does not exceed 2,000 hours. After adopting large mill pumps, the pumps have operated continuously for over ,000 hours while maintaining performance, with an expected life of 6,000 to 8,000 hours. This demonstrates that in-high-flow, highly abrasive scenarios, hydraulic design, materials, and strength are equally critical.
For conditions where corrosion and abrasion coexist, pump selection becomes more challenging. Taking an Israeli plant as an example, the medium is rich in magnesium chloride, sodium chloride, and bromides, accompanied by high temperature, strong corrosion, and high abrasion. In such scenarios, ordinary stainless steel may not be suitable. corrosion-resistant alloys, cartridge mechanical seals, and targeted flow-pass component designs are required to reduce the risk of leakage and failure.
Additionally, in a Peruvian copper mine project, the original 450mm outlet slurry pump suffered from low impeller efficiency and short life. By customizing a high-chromium impeller, optimizing blade profiles through CFD, and adjusting the heat treatment process, the impeller life was improved by approximately 100%, and pump efficiency increased by about 6%. This indicates that optimizing slurry pumps is not simply about replacing materials but requires a systematic integration of hydraulic design, wear-resistant materials, and manufacturing processes.
Overall, for slurry pump selection under high-concentration abrasive conditions, three key points should be emphasized: first, accurately grasp the medium parameters; second, match the pressure and continuous operation requirements of the process system; third, select appropriate materials and structures based on corrosion, abrasion, temperature, and particle characteristics. A truly reliable slurry pump is not just one that can "pump out" the medium, but one that can operate stably over the long term under high loads, reducing downtime and maintenance costs.
